Hello NY Hounds,
I'm a little reluctant to post since I'm not sure I can provide the specificity that regulars like to respond to. And, I myself find these recommendation requests a little tiresome sometimes. But I've been combing the board and am still unsure where to land so here goes:
Group of about 12, mostly non-NYers looking for dinner recommendation for an October Saturday evening. (A collective celebration of our turning 50.) Not all are as in to food as I and one or two others, but we can likely persuade the others to follow our lead so open to most cuisines (except Italian, perhaps - there are Italians in the group and that might get tiresome, might not, hard to say). Price point is the tricky bit but I would say if we could keep it under $75/head (incl. drinks/tip) that would be ideal, under $100 will be considered. While we're a big group, I don't think we want to spring for a private room. We're mostly staying Midtown, but do know how to taxi/subway.
My fave restaurant in all of NY is Russ and Daughters cafe but that's out because we're too big a group. Also rather adored a (an additional) birthday celebration at Gabriel Kreuther this summer (but that's out because too expensive for the group). Ma Peche has been proposed because they do those group meals, but I know this board is quite divided on that spot. Even though I said no Italian, I'm sure that everyone would love the Pesce part of Eataly, now that I think about it. The Chinatown option (Royal Seafood has been proposed) would be my choice, but deemed not festive enough by others.
So, can you suggest a festive dinner option for a large-ish group, with decent cocktails, good food for me and the others who care, not hideously expensive?
