group dinner -- midprice range --Downtown SF

Hello all:

I know that I've gotten good advice from you all before, and I'm sure sister Susan would have ideas, but since I have a couple of dinners to plan I'd like a variety of opinions:

I'm looking for a nice place for dinner for a group of between 12 and 18 people from all over the country. We are staying at the Sir Francis Drake, and believe it or not I live the closest to SF (plus grew up in the area) so I am in charge of "local arrangements." We will be having two group dinners, on a Thursday and a Friday night. This is a fairly conservative bunch, but they like good food. No vegetarians than I know of. Sorry, no Indian, Mexican (not that we would in downtown SF), or Thai. More upscale Chinese would be ok. Preferably within walking distance from the hotel. If I had to guess I would say that Italian or seafood would be favorites. We have some budget restrictions this year, so not too expensive....maybe around $30 to 40 pp not including wine or booze? (One of the two nights we could go closer to 50....). This event is in early November, btw.....so I have about six weeks to plan.

Any ideas?? The more the merrier!! See you all at the picnic!!!
