Group of 7 or 8 from South Africa... fairly quiet, not top-tier pricing

erica | Sep 18, 201805:39 AM     5

I have great friends coming from South Africa this month. I want to do them right, as they have asked me to choose a place for a semi-business dinner.

We need someplace on the quiet side so we can chat.

I suggested Babbo and Upland, both of which are personal favorites for more "formal" dinners.

Craft and Marea are too pricey, just to mention two other places we like for "adult" dinners.

So far, online, neither Babbo nor Upland have the OT availability for that date (October 9) but I will phone both later today. Because of the dire exchange rate, dollar vs rand (now about 15 rand to one USD) prices will be sky high for our hosts.

I also suggested Ping's, based on a recent Eater review by R. Sietsema. Anyone been here lately and would that be an ok choice if they will approve a Chinese dinner?

Most ethnic apart from Chinese is out, so no Indian or Mexican. Spanish is ok...thought of Tkikito but it can be a little noisy. No chance of sampling Flushing this time. I think they would rather have more local or, second choice, maybe Chinese, since CapeTown is not filled with great Chinese places.

I want very much to help my dearest friends from the "Mother City," (if you have never been, run, do not walk!!), but am a bit stumped here. Appreciate any helpful comments. We prefer midtown or lower Manhattan; no chance of outer boroughs. At this "late" date the issue seems to be the ability to book a table around 6pm; we cannot eat after 7/7:30pm.
