help with ground almonds

For a cookie recipe (Sparkles from 5 Senses cafe in Vancouver) I ground up almonds in my food processor. Even though they weren't fully ground they started to get pasty like almond butter. How do you get almonds finely ground without hitting the almond butter stage? Thanks.
