Grotto or Sage for overnight in Boston?

After reading many posts on this website, I've narrowed our choices to these two well-recommended restaurants. My husband and I will be staying at a hotel in downtown Boston (waiting to make last minute priceline reservations!) and wanted a great place to dine for my birthday. We don't like anything terribly formal or stuffy and my husband would be disappointed with very small portions (this is my fear at Sage...) We both love Italian and enjoy a creative menu. We love to walk around Boston (even in the cold), so location is not critical although a nice atmosphere is...
