I am not a neophite to Grotto. I have had many a stellar lunch there and decided to finally take the husband given: (a) he cannot hear (read: envy) about another business lunch there; and (b) the July prices are great. So, we stop at the Red Hat for a starter and are happy happy when walk in at the appointed time. Restaurant is 1/3 full. Place order for dinner and wine. Get served apps almost too soon(beet salad and fig with salad; during the latter I almost had to stop all conversation it was so sublime). Half the way through the apps we finally get the wine. We then wait a solid 30 minutes for dinner. Finish equally sublime dinner (we share short ribs - ohmygod good- and pork chop- just shy of that) and then sit (restaurant now 7/8 full). I am thirsty but never get water refilled never mind the chance to inquire for the same. Finally someone takes our plates and 10 minutes or so later, we are presented with the dessert menus. It was not until another 20 min. go by and a party of 7 enters that needs our space that someone asks if we want dessert. We say we have waited too long and want a coffee and the check (forgoing 1/3 of the $30 special because our appetites have been ruined and our tab to our babysitter has been running . . .). We get a lame excuse that they are training someone new but have to wait a while for the check. I am a former server. One or two strikes for training, okay. Bad service throughout the meal, yuck. Love, love, love the food, hard to think of going back soon.
