You know those meals when you ooh and ah and make almost obscene noises while eating? This was one of them. And why was the place not packed at 8:30 on a Fri. nite? It was probably 2/3 full and we were the only ones left when we paid at about 10:00, just not right. In any case, choice of the menu to put together your own 3 course fixed price meal is a pretty sweet deal. Pasta courses weren't included on that and we almost ordered one for 3 of us to split but I'm glad we forgot cuz we had more than enough food (esp. with the great bread and olive oil). I started with a grilled calamari salad app. that was good but I wasn't into the chickpea type dressing (if that's even what it was). Maybe I should have gone with the gorgonzola stuffed fig w/ prosciutto. One friend enjoyed her beet and goat cheese salad and one got fondue w/ beef and portobello mushrooms that was very good. My scallop entree was just amazing, only 3 scallops tho and they weren't the super big beautiful ones, but sweet and nicely grilled with a corn pudding type side. One friend had halibut w/ some excellent scampi sauce and the other had the prosciutto wrapped beef tenderloin, both very very good. We got one of each dessert altho the beef guy didn't even taste a bite of any of them, silly boy. My banana bread pudding with caramel ice cream was yummy, the warm choc. cake was decent altho maybe not sweet enough and bordering on salty, and the custard w/ fresh strawberries was nice and light. The only bummer was the icky little glass they served the white wine in. You've got two more weeks for this wonderful deal, this is probably as good as anything that's gonna go on during restaurant week and it's the WHOLE MENU to choose from.
On a side note, we started with drinks at the Red Hat which was pretty fun, I'd never been there all these years in Boston. Two levels with lots of baseball watching. He made my new special drink (Stoli vanilla, midori & pineapple juice) and that packed a punch in one of those giant martini glasses. One friend got the vodka infused with berries that was sitting on the bar, one just got some beer. Friendly bartender (whose pants couldn't have been pulled up any higher) and clientele. Has anyone eaten there? I'm curiuous to check out the bar food some time.
