Grocery stores overcharging

What is going on with grocery stores? Is overcharging on a regular basis a business model?

I live in San Francisco and shop at a few chain stores on a regular basis to supplement my local market trips. I'm overcharged on average at Whole Foods about 50% of the time. Crazy right? It's easy to notice because I only buy 2-7 items at a time there. Often the over charge is an extra item ie: two cartons of milk vs. one or not getting the sale price and sometimes it's just a straight out incorrect price. I was charged $4+ for one Idaho potato once. I've had to get into the habit of checking the receipt every time.

I have a worse problem at Smart & Final and am overcharged about 90% of the time - not kidding.

Had the same thing happen at Lowes recently, so I guess it's not just grocery stores. I've shopped there twice ever and both times had egregious over charges.

I've had a couple incidences at Safeway but for the most part, they don't seem to overcharge much.

One might tell me to just give someone else my business but it seems to be a pervasive problem with many companies. Seems like there should be some kind of consumer protection.

I have now become a rabid receipt checker. What's your experience?
