One of my fondest memories as a kid was when I watched my Grandmother, who was born in Germany, make what she called "greffeler". I'm not sure that this would be the spelling, but it sounded like that. They were made of flour, yeast, butter, eggs, sugar and milk. At least that is all I could remember of the ingredients. She used to fry them in melted Crisco and before dropping them in the hot liquid she shaped them like derby hats and let them rise on a wooden board and covered them with a dish towel. When they grew a bit, she fried them and then sprinkled them with powdered sugar. I have been trying to find a recipe for these chewy cakes. Can anyone give me a lead?
