Greenfield MA food alert -- the fiddlehead soup is ready

fatheryod | Apr 14, 2010 01:11 PM

Saw the sign was out this morning as I drove past Denny's Pantry on 5/10 in Greenfield (just south of Rt. 2) so I pulled a U-turn and parked, ran to the counter, and ordered a cup of this lovely soup. I'd never had it so early in the day before and it was fantastic. The soup is dairy-based, a bit similar to cream of mushroom, but the fiddleheads (basically, baby ferns) have a mushroomy texture and taste, but a vivid green color. The soup this time also had a more noticeable onion bite. Maybe it's cause it was early in the day. Regardless, the soup is never available for more than a couple of weeks, and they even run out sometimes during the day. But it's very worth checking out. Really one of the Valley's secret treats.
