I was never thrilled about Mollie Stone in San Francisco. It was a backup place ... if I was in the area and didn't have time to go elsewhere. Prices seemed too high and there were better stores in SF. So I didn't rush to check out Mollie Stone in Greenbrae or Sausalito. Mistake ... big mistake.
To me, the Mollie Stone on Sir Francis Drake is probably the second best supermarket in the Bay Area just behind Sonoma Market (Berkeley Bowl is in a class by itself).
I cannot believe the selection. There were thirty types of butter and every type of yogurt I've seen and some Kosher yogurt I've never seen before. And even within the yogurt category there were flavors of say, St Benoit that I've never seen like Meyer Lemon.
The big thing for me is that they carry fantastic Acme fish in the deli section ... herring in wine, herring in sour cream and the whitefish salad. It is not pre-packaged so you can get as much or as little as you like.
The whitefish salad is so smooth and deeply, luxuriosly tasting of top-quality whitefish.
There were other impressive fishes like lox and whole white fish. It is the first time anywhere I've seen a brand name attached to a whitefish.
They carry a big line of Boars Head products and I was surprised to see Boars Head beet horseradish along with a lot of mustards that were new to me.
Nice meat department with Saags natural casing hot dogs that could be bought each. They also had a healthy selection of packaged sausages like DiBrova.
The bakery was looking good. They sold mini pricess cakes in two colors ... no mini-price ($14). Still they were a third of the size of a normal princess cake which is nice if you don't want to commit.
Bagels are from both House of Bagels and Marin Bagel. The produce department was even not bad for a grocery store. They had some nice looking white heirloom tomatoes. Even though the cheese was pre-cut the selection looked good, probably as good as a Whole Foods.
Astounding wine/liquor aisle.
So people with more experience ... what is good here? The roast chickens in the deli were looking good. Anything to skip.
Is the Sausalito store as good?
I don't know if all Mollie Stone stores carry Acme herring and whitefish salad, but if they do, I highly recommend both.
