green-skinned lichees?

In my local Asian grocery stores this summer I've seen lichees with green skins, alongside the usual red-brown skinned versions. The green fruit taste much like the brown ones, except the skins are thinner and the seed pods smaller. occasionally the flesh is slightly bitter but these may just be immature fruit. Are these just a different variety?
