I'm from CT, but I lived in New Orleans as a child, most of my friends in L.A. are from the tri-state area. For the past 8 years we've been looking for an east coast style seafood place. Nothing fancy just a cheap crab shack. Better yet a place that does an Old Bay style crab boil like they do in Delaware and Maryland. I spent my summers there and have been eating crab since I was very young.
We've tried all the usual suspects in L.A. and were disappointed. Then we went Asian, closer but not what we we're looking for. I'd given up hope of ever finding a place that satisfied me until Jaydee posted about the Boiling Crab in Garden Grove a few weeks back.

We drove for an hour and expected to be disappointed but the Boiling Crab is good or better then anything I remember. I spent three weeks in Louisiana last summer so my memory is still fresh. We opted for the "whole sha-bang" boil with the crayfish and we were blown away.
We had "ragin Cajun" boil with the shrimp and it was tasty. The shrimp come with the heads on and were so tender you could eat them with the shell on.
They didnt have blue crabs out of season I guess but I can wait.
The oysters were nothing special.
Jaydees right the gumbo is the weak spot too watery.
The place was run by teenagers who were very friendly and talkative. They told us theyve been open for two years and want to expand.
I cannot describe how happy finding this place makes me. Its crazy that its a Vietnamese family that finally opens a decent crab shack but thats what I like about California. Youve just gotta keep an mind open.
We drove past another Asian Cajun joint on the way home. I ran inside, it just opened and didnt have the crowd or the right décor that the Boiling Crab did.
I cannot recommend the Boiling Crab enough. Just call first and see if they have blue crabs.
