Great weekend dinner # 1 – Vert

Went last Saturday night, second time. It is very convenient eating right after a movie. I really like the looks of the place, ate in the bar area last time, main room this time, both are nice. I love a menu where I cannot decide what to order, everything looked great, as did the wine list. Wolfgang’s brother oversees the place and the wine list and it shows, an amazing assortment of everything, 4-5 big red’s from AU, Italian, central-coast CA, Rhone, whatever you are in the mood for, its on the list – corkage is $ 15 and they don’t mind a bit. There are some decent bottles in the low $ 40 range – step up to $ 50+ and you will find more. Karen served us last time; she was tending bar but came over to say hi. The service is very friendly and fast, great bread and never an empty water glass. The attention to detail is evident everywhere.

We had the Sizzling Mussels Mariniere, which was out of this world. More than enough for two to split, in a wonderful broth with toasted bread and the whole dish was drizzled with what tasted like béarnaise sauce. Waiting for us at the end of the dish were dozens of hunks of garlic. I would go back for just this dish alone. For our mains, we ordered a Salmon Roasted with Almond Crust and Celery Root Puree and the Butter Lettuce & Endive with Roquefort, Olives and Orange. The salmon was to die for, perfect quality fish – one of the best salmon dish’s I have ever had. The salad was also delicious, simple – enough for a small entrée. Honestly, the mussels were big enough that unless you are a huge eater this will be enough. I brought my own wine so the tab with corkage was around $ 60. I think for the quality of food this place is a bargain, the only salmon dish that comes close to this for $ 16 is at 2117 or maybe Brigitte's in SB. Throw in the great atmosphere and attentive service and it is a solid place, imo. I had the NY steak last time with the French onion soup and it was outstanding, the NY came with some of the best fries I have ever had and I know something about fries. The beef shortribs are also supposed to be great. I love places that have a current menu and wine list on-line – check it out and go if you are ever in the neighborhood, you will be happy you did I think.
