Great Wall supermarket observations

Penguinsix | Oct 31, 200503:10 PM

I was wondering what opinions are developing of the new Asian supermarket Great Wall located at 50 and Gallows Road. I was there within a few days of the open and found the selection rather similar to Super H Mart, but on a second trip recently was very disappointed in the quality of produce. On a scale of 1-4 with 1 being the best and 4 being rotten, I'd say most was a 3. I also saw some of the fish in the "tank" (i.e. the live ones) floating upside down due to a lack of oxygen (not dead just yet, but not exactly as fresh as you would like).

I've also found that most of the butchers and fishmongers spoke Spanish, with a little English and no Chinese, which led to some interesting conversations and more than a few frustrated buyers.

Overall it still is cleaner than most other Chinese groceries I've been to, but I'm wondering if the sub-par produce was a one-off or if others have had a similar experience.
