Great sushi in Alhambra/South Pas border

I've been meaning to post this for a while in hopes that Chowhounds will discover this hidden treasure. Z Sushi, on Garfield near Huntington Drive in Alhambra, is truly a great sushi place. It is such a large restaurant that maybe people think it isn't personal, but the sushi chefs are artists and take great care to make you feel at home, while often giving you samples of new creations while you sit at the bar. The main sushi chef told me he lived and worked in Mexico(!) at a sushi place years ago, which shows in his use of jalapenos and mexican chili in some of his more creative rolls. Don't get me wrong- he is a true Japanese at heart (being Japanese, it is easy to sense:) but I love that he is not afraid nor too steeped in tradition to really be bold and use his Italian training by fusing ingredients like the freshest giant clam with aged balsamic and fresh basil. He will also serve up a small bowl of perfectly clear broth with a small piece of broiled yellowtail still on the bone with a tiny slice of yuzu peel, which is as traditional Japanese as you can get. Try the grilled squid stuffed with salmon, avacado, and asparagus (called Tiger Eye)- it will blow your socks off. My husband and I go about once a week and it is never crowded. I am hoping that true sushi afficianados will support the efforts of an extremely talented chef. Enjoy.
