Great spot for Lobster Tails (the pastry kind)

the Veniero's posts inspired me to make a quick shout out on a GREAT place for homemade lobster tails... (for the uneducated - lobster tails are an Italian specialty, large cones of very crispy pastry filled with a whipped custard)

The place is - La Bella Ferrara Pasticceria - on Mulberry a couple doors above Canal on the east side of the street. (they're not related to Ferrara's on Grand. their lobster tails are much better, fresher, crisper)

They only have them available on Fridays and Saturdays (sometimes Sunday's if they do not sell out). I think they make them Friday - so they are freshest that day. These tails are so brown, crispy and delicate on the outside, with a filling that is whipped and light yet very rich and custardy tasting (the custard has that yum, homey flavor like grandma's!) these are nothing like the ones you will get at other Little Italy or Village pastry shops where they sit in the case for a while, and loose most of their crispiness.

They even have mini versions that are about 1/2 size of regular ones (which I prefer because a whole lobster tail is like a meal, and saving half for later it starts to get soggy)

the shop has a nice old-school vibe and atmosphere. it's in the heart of the tourist action, and only has a couple tables out front for sitting down, but you can get a big box tied up with string to take home :-)

I've been getting them here for over 15 years and they are always/consistently great!
