For those of you who revel in the ribs at Memphis Blues BBQ House, read no further as there is no hope. One of the culinary styles that is largely missing in BC (and maybe most of Canada) is the smoking of meat other than salmon. Try out this place off Route 1 in Golden, the Firepit BBQ Smokehouse on 1105 Frontage Road. They do things right. To start with, there are 3-4 different BBQ sauces sitting for you to try on your order or squeeze on your forefinger to try. 2 tomato based and 1 vinegary mustard based. All 3 unique and good. So you can choose your favorite, or mix, and put on the ribs that are nicely done -- not slathered with sauce or falling off the bone -- the two major faults of what they serve as BBQ ribs at most joints that say they serve ribs. The meat was well-smoked and had integrity and taste...quite excellent. The only place in BC that may be a rival is the relatively new Peckinpah's in downtown Vancouver. You can also find BBQ (aka, smoked) brisket and chicken, both being quite delicious. The chef is a transplanted Dutchman (?!?) who loves what he does, and it shows.
