A great sandwich--La Piccola Cucina

For an absolutely stunning sandwich, I recommend La
Piccola Cucina, which is located on the east side of
Broadway between 106th and 107th st. They use fresh,
crusty Italian peasant bread and have about 16
different sandwich combos. I'm a vegetarian, so I'm
somewhat limited in my choice. Yesterday I had a
grilled vegetable sandwich with sun-dried tomatoes,
olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and pesto. The sandwich
actually comes with grilled eggplant and mozerella, but
I had them substitute assorted grilled veggies for the
cheese. Their ingredients are all bursting with
flavor, which was a nice change of pace from some of
the really mundane versions of this sandwich I've had
(try, for instance, the insipid, flavorless, visually
attractive grilled veggies at Cosi). On other
occasions I've tried their tuna sandwich, which has
mounds of fresh arugula, goat cheese, sun-dried
tomatoes, and olive-oil packed Italian tuna. The
sandwiches cost between $5.50 and $6.50, and they are
absolutely huge--might even provide two meals for those
with a smallish appetite. Be sure to order one of the
sandwiches on the overhanging list though, and don't
take one of the pre-made saran wrapped, somewhat slimy
looking focaccia jobbies. They look decidedly midtown.
