On Saturday, I was tooling around Newhall (not really - I was watering mom's plants while she is in Iceland and Norway) and remembered a Pho place that I noticed the last time I was at Trader Joe's - Pho Love (yeah, dumb name). It is located across the street from the Trader Joe's on Cinema. I was definitely skeptical as Pho 2000 on Lyons is horrible, but gave it a try nonetheless. It is a bright space (walls could do with some touch-up) and I was the only patron there at 5:30-ish. I sat down and the very sweet and helpful waiter brought me some water and a menu which was pretty limited. They have 7 types of Pho (House Special includes meatball, rare steak, flank, brisket, tripe, tendon and something called "crunch brisket" for $7.95) which ranges in price from $5.95 (plain noodle & soup) to $9.95 (Super Bowl which includes all that mentioned above plus Seafood - shrimp, squid, fish ball). I opted for the Pho Tai (here called Little Tai) $7.25 and a Vietnamese Iced Coffee ($3.50). They also have Vermicelli and fried rice dishes and Charbroiled Pork chop and Chicken sauteed with ginger ($8.99-9.99). Appetizer list comprises of: Summer Roll $4.95; Egg Roll $7.25 and Cha Gio $6.45. They sell Boba and some type of soft serve.
The first thing I do when I get a bowl of Pho set in front of me is taste the broth. This broth was really good - meaty, deep flavor. Not as good as my fave, Pho 79, but a very close second. I was impressed. I went about doctoring it up like always - extra cilantro, lotsa lime, all the jalapenos, bean sprouts, chili and hoisin sauce. I was good to go! The waiter brough me my coffee and even set it up for me. Everything was delicious and I was a very happy girl. It is nice to know that there is good Pho to be had in the SCV!!
The service was so attentive and wonderful that I gave the server a great tip. The waiter said that the place changed ownership a few months ago. Unfortunately, it seems that since they are shoved into a corner of a strip mall that has a Indian Restaurant, Chinese Restaurant and a Italian/Brick Oven Pizza Place, and several empty spaces, I think they get overlooked. While I was there only 2 other parties came in and one person came in to pick up an order to go. Let's try to keep this place open - go check it out and post here what you think!! Thanks!
