great online reviews that don't match your visit experience

I'm pretty new to the area I live in (Denver metro area). I don't have many friends here so I rely on online reviews for some guidance. Chowhound is the slowest thing around for my regional board so I tend to go to Yelp which is not my choice of review sites but it'll do. I also look at Tripadvisor and Zagats which is sort of useless these days. I've now been to 3 restaurants with mostly favorable reviews but had an entirely opposite experience. To the point of never going back unless someone else chose it for a party of a work meeting. One restaurant, I walked in and the host wouldn't look up from his phone so i walked out. My husband went back in to take our child to the restroom and couldn't use it bc it was DISGUSTING. I can't even get into the detail of how gross it was but I'm sure you get it. This place has raving reviews of their service. Really? The place looked like a makeshift dive bar after 2am. Are these reviews fake?

Am I just having bad luck or does this happen to you too? in your area?
