Three great meals

Just back from a terrific weekend in Montreal. Great weather, great meals, a lot of fun. I had made dinner reservations at three places, and I was glad I did.

THURS: Au Pied de Cochon. Terrific "croquemois de foie gras" (deep fried bits of foie gras that melt in the mouth) and the plate of cochonailles to start. Then the Steak (venison) & Frites and the deer ribs. A great meal, terrific service and care.

FRI: L'Express. Oysters and sauteed artichokes to start. Then roasted ray wing and veal kidneys in mustard sauce. Again, a great meal, beautifully and thoughtfully presented in a favorite bistro.

SAT: Au Petit Extra. The big surprise. A great, great meal in a fun, fun place. Salads to start (welcome after so much meat during the weekend), then soupe de poisson and oysters. Plats: Duck breast fanned out over beautiful vegetables, and bavette grilled with 7 spices over mashed potatoes and a tender assortment of vegetables. The wait staff was extraordinary, the evening a great pleasure. Can't wait to return.

No room for dessert any night. But no problem when the meals are this good. Besides, we bought terrific stuff at the Jean Talon Market to snack on.
