We'd been before with a large group, and it was just OK. But we and MrTen went this evening and I must say we had an excellent experience.
Great Negroni, a cocktail with whom I have an tempestous love/hate relationship. Love the flavor notes, but it's gin, with which I'm unwilling to strip paint from cabinets.
We shared the Barbarossa salad which they split in the kitchen without our begging and made two nicely styled proportions. Beautifully done, high quality ingredients.
I had the Bolonese- not an easy dish to get "right" and they did. On the lamb-y side, gutsy meat flavors, excellent housemade pasta.
Mrs Name had the Pappardelle that she ordered mild, and I helped polish that off as well. Very enjoyable.
A chocolate pie for dolce, and they added some marscarpone gelato for MrTen, who, lucky for me, didn't care for it. He's a chocolate ice cream devotee.
The food was very good, I really liked it.
But more than that was the experience. My OpenTable profile asks for quiet tables to the side of the room, and we were seated in the Wine Room at a four-top by ourselves! This is my idea of heaven- a close, quiet room to ourselves, and MrTen was enthusiastic about closing the door.
We had a few different servers but each had the same attitude- they treat their diners as if they are guests in their home. Every one of the servers were kind, deferential and personable without being "Biff the server today". They were all very interested in making sure we had a pleasant meal. Someone has trained them beyond simple service- they understand hospitality. And it shows.
I'm confident one could find a higher-caliber of food in Berlin. I'll bet there is better handmade pasta in the world.
But those places would have a hard time duplicating our experience at Solare tonight.
Great meal, top of the A list, we'll be back!
