Manhattan Tomatoes

Great local strawberries, cheaper than Union Sq Greenmkt's outrageous prices? (And tomatoes maybe?)

Great local strawberries, cheaper than Union Sq Greenmkt's outrageous prices? (And tomatoes maybe?)

Because $6 for a pint of strawberries, no matter how amazing (and they are), or $10 for two pints just ain't right.

Yep, I'm from the frugal wing of the hound army.

Unfortunately, most street fruit vendors seem to be selling mediocre-to-just-okayish California strawberries. And supermarkets too, from what I've seen.

I work in the Soho/Noho area, but I'll go pretty much anywhere in the southern half of Manhattan. (I actually live in Newark, NJ, but spend most of my time here, except weekends.)

And is it tomato season in the region yet? I got some absolutely spectacular Delaware tomatoes at a huge roadside market while driving through that state a few weeks ago. (Gee, and I thought Delaware was nothing but billboards for churches and exotic dancers.) Union Sq. Greenmarket has NJ hothouse tomatoes for $3.50/pound, which seems steep, although it's not as atrocious as the strawberry prices.
