Local gumbo now has a new king of the hill. I went to the Gumbo Shack 1 block east of Inglewood's city hall on La Brea and had their "signature" Mucho Gumbo to go.
$13.95 netted me a hefty bowl full of meatty crab legs, several shrimp, plenty of chicken and perhaps a few other diced meats, all well-flavored and medium-spiced. A very nice balance compared to Stevie's, who seems to enjoy dropping chunks of chicken breast in his orders to round out the meat quotient. The Shack is also several dollars cheaper for their largest order, and you can also buy the ample medium ($8.95) or taster's (4.95) portions.
If you favor either chicken or seafood you can order those exclusively instead of the Mucho (at the same price), though I've always felt gumbo is at it's best when it's a jumble of many ingredients.
I'd love to report on their shrimp po-boy but the Mucho Gumbo left zero room; manana is good enough for me and my sandwhich.
They have other creolian offerings like Jambalaya and red beans and rice, plus various commonplace items such as hot wings and turkey burgers. They'll also sell you fried catfish or red snapper dinners with sides like mashed potatoes or "bayou mac and cheese". I went for the gumbo so have no idea one way or the other as to how these stack up in terms of value or quality.
For dessert they'll sell you a slice of one of four (G. Chocolate, Chocolate, Red Velvet and one other) home-baked cakes, or a slice of peach cobbler or even "sweet potato cheese cake".

Ample metered parking directly in front of the joint. Happily, these meters still accept nickels and thus won't hurt too much. Ambling, smilling families strolling about doing their shopping will pass you by as you visit so please to those of you so inclined, post no ignorant comments about the 'hood etc.
