I was very lucky to dine at La Grenouille for lunch the other day. I had never been before, but I will certainly return.

First off, the room. It's certainly old school. Fairly opulent. Perhaps it could use some freshening, but I doubt the clientele cares. Most importantly, it was packed for lunch.

Service. Very gracious at the front of the room. I was made to feel completely comfortable coming in from the bitter cold. Seated promptly, too. Service at the table was also quite good. My only beef was that the water refills could have been a bit more snappy.

Ah, the food. I had the hors d'ouevre sampler. I can't remember exactly what was in it (not the most useful review, I realize) and it may change anyway, but it was fantastic. Each choice was tastier than the one before. For my main, I had the fillet of bass with butternut squash, artichokes, and pumpkin seeds. I was hoping for a very pumpkiny flavor, but that is not what it was. Who cares? It was heavenly. Nice piece of fish, cooked perfectly. The veggies were a great match. Fantastic. One of my dining companions had the chicken curry, which looked bad to me, but which he said was creamy and delicious. My other companion had the poached chicken special, which he seemed to like. For dessert, I had the almond tart (torte?). Super-sweet and delish. The other two had the chocolate mousse, which they both proclaimed to be the best they had ever had.

Yum.
