Yesterday, I was heading down 154th St. and noticed a new place on the corner of 11th Ave. and 154th called, "Panorama Bakery and Cafe." It's on the same block as the now defunct "White House". I stopped in to check it out. They have a lot of Greek baked goods and desserts, as well as other sweets. They also bake fresh breads daily and have a counter where you can order coffee, muffins, etc.
I tried a bunch of things, but have to RAVE a bit about one thing in particular...the Ekmek. I have never had this before and now I wonder how I spent my life without it! Ekmek (there is a dispute as to whether it is Greek or Turkish in origin) is a layered dessert. The bottom layer is angel hair pastry in a sweet syrup, then a layer of custard, then a layer of whipped cream, topped with toasted almonds. It was absolutely delicious! The syrupy bottom layer was not cloyingly sweet and was a perfect balance for the light custard and cream. When I got home, my husband and I tasted the Ekmek and could not stop eating it. I immediately got back in the car and returned to get two more servings to get us through the weekend, plus some other items to test. I'm not Greek, so I can't compare this Ekmek to the one my mother made and since I never had it before, I can't compare it to versions anywhere else. All I can tell you is that it was wonderful.
We also tried a few more items...the chocolate covered chocolate mousse (very good), the tiramisu (very tasty), and the strawberry shortcake (light and well made, but needs more strawberries). What I liked about everything is that nothing was overly sweet.
The owner was so nice, as well. I'll definitely return to try the breads, Greek cookies, etc., but Ekmek will always be on my list. They are open 7 days a week, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.. Worth a stop!
