We just got back from a business trip/extra long weekend in Munich, and what fun! Didn't do the major gastro thing, but had several good dinners at one of our favorite places for hanging out -- the Weisses Brauhaus -- and a newish smaller place (2-3 years old) opened the other side of the Marienplatz by Kloster Andechs. The Andechs Helles -- more like a fine pilsner than most helles -- was terrific, as was the crowd on the outdoor heated patio. And their is nothing like Schneider Weisse, at the Weisses Brauhaus, when that beer is really fresh and creamy.
It was game season also, so we took advantage of the specials to enjoy several different venison dishes and wild mushrooms. The cooking at both places was well prepared traditional Bavarian and was fine comfort food, delicious on a chilly evening. Although I must say the spaetzle at the Weisses Brauhaus are the best and very lightest I've ever tasted. Quite fabulous, delicate texture and delicious with the wild mushroom cream sauce that was on the meat. And of course, the entree portions at the Weisses Brauhaus are way beyond what either my husband or I could finish. Especially as they came with quite saucy but delicious and bacony red cabbage and the red currant/cramberry like sauce on the side.
Friday night at the Weisses Braushaus was pretty wild people watching with one group -- clearly a local drinking club or something to that effect -- capping the evening with table handstands and song. The crowd at the Andechs place was mostly a youngish professional/business sort and quite friendly.
