Were coming down in April for some wildflowers, music and chow. Well be in Austin Sat and Sun night (Easter will some places be closed?) before heading off to San A. and the hill country, then coming back to Austin for a Friday night before heading home. I hope to pass through Lockhart for some BBQ, and get to the Hill Top Café in F-burg and just generally make a pig of myself eating stuff that is rare or usually done poorly in New England. That includes Mexican, Tex-Mex, southern-style, BBQ, and German fare. We get plenty of good seafood and Italian. I want some chicken fried steak for a change!
The Bluebonnet café in Marble falls, and Coopers BBQ in Llano look pretty promising to me, as well. But I dont know where to go in Austin so many places look good. Brunch at Fonda San Miguel sounds interesting sounds like they may have a special, more expensive selection on Easter Sunday. Not sure if I want a giant brunch, however. A great plate of migas somewhere might be just as wonderful for me, and would leave me more time to explore town for the first time.
As for dinners, places that sound fun, with atmospheres very different from Boston, dont seem to get great reviews for food. Places like Threadgills and Chuys . Tonys sounds like the kind of food Id love, but less fun perhaps than Threadgills. But maybe the nuances of the best chicken-fried steak are lost on a northerner like me anyway?
What do you suggest for fun, local color places for the above types of food for dinners. And places open for breakfast migas on Easter? Outdoor dining is a plus. After dinner drinking/music suggestions wanted too!
Ill be sure to report back on my trip. I wish I was going today Its zero degrees F here today and windy and Im looking at leftover vegetarian chili for lunch. Gotta loss some weight, so I can gain it all back in one week in April. Thanks!
