Great Falls, MT: Three Dinners and a Breakfast

We recently visited Great Falls, MT and had four meals locally. First up was Mackenzie River Pizza Company (500 River Drive S). We ordered a half Flathead (Alfredo sauce, mozz, chicken, bacon, spinach, diced tomatoes, mushrooms) and half Mackenzie River (olive oil, mozz, feta, garlic, spinach, zucchini, mushrooms, diced tomatoes) on a regular crust (they also offer a thin crust). The pizza was very good, the ambiance was fairly upscale - more like a casual steak and chop house than a pizza joint - and we would gladly go back again.

The second dinner we had was at Faster Basset, which shares a space with The Front Brewing Company (215 3rd Street SW). We ordered a Smokey Joe's chicken crepe, an F&B Burger (bacon cheeseburger), and a Southwest Burger (bacon, roasted peppers, pepper jack, and queso sauce). The food was excellent, but the ambiance was way too industrial and noisy for our taste. We would have eaten outside on the patio, but that would have put us at the mercy of the mosquitoes that were buzzing ravenously. Simply on the noise factor, we probably would not return, but the burgers and crepe were very good.

Third dinner was at Eddie's Supper Club (3725 2nd Ave N) for steak. Man, the steaks were good. The decor was a throwback to the 60s, as were the servers. The only nit was that they were out of baked potatoes, so the alternative menu offerings were french fries or potato skins. Well, it turns out the fries were standard crinkle-cut food service fries, and were nothing special. The 'potato skins', OTOH, were not at all what I expect potato skins to be. Rather than partially hollowed out potato halves, filled with cheese, bacon bits, or other savories, these were simply wedges of potatoes that were deep fried. I suspect they may have been dusted in cornstarch before frying, because the outside was VERY crisp, and very tasty.

Our last meal in Great Falls was breakfast, which we took at 5th Street Diner (500 Central Avenue), which looks like it may have been an old time lunch counter diner. We ordered a variety of omelets (including veggie and meatloaf). The veggie omelet was the best of the three. The meatloaf omelet was quite tasty, but the meatloaf itself had a really weird, almost spongy texture. I was also a little disappointed because I was really jonesing for a chicken fried steak, but they didn't have it on the menu. The food was good, the prices fair, but we'll probably try someplace else next time. I really wanted CFS...
