Took my three 20-something relatives last night after a matinee show. It was the perfect mix of relaxed environment and unique, fun food. We started with a large tapas plate. This was different than I expected - I think of tapas as small individual plates to pass. This came as one large plate with globs of our choices - spicy walnut pepper dip, tatziki, lentil dip and baba ganouj, with a basket of pita wedges. Not so attractively presented, but totally delicious. The baba ganouj was especially wonderful, with a really distinctive roasted flavor. We followed with kashkaval cheese fondue. None of us were familiar with kashkaval, and we liked it alot - reminded me of Greek kasseri. With a bottle of the house red (Montepulciano), four of us ate for $100, which I thought was really reasonable (and they're all young guys with great appetites). 856 9th ave between 50 & 51.
