I was recently on a trip with my Spanish class to see a Spanish play, and we went to Havana Pies (219 E. 23rd) for lunch. What great food! (Side note- an empanada is similar to a turnover, with either sweet or savory filling in a dough that's fried till crispy)
The place is really small, but the empanadas were amazing. Highly recommended: the Cubano (like the sandwich, except an empanada. roast pork, ham, swiss, pickles, mayo, and mustard), Coconut Curried Vegetables, and Pernil Asado (marinated roast pork with garlic, basted in adobo seasonings). Next time I will definitely get a combo, served with rice and beans. The sweet potato fries and maduros (fried sweet plantains) were also a hit. For dessert, try a blueberry, apple, or pineapple empanada, dusted with powdered sugar. To drink, try a tropical "batido." I had mango, and a friend had guayaba. Both were yummy.
Delicious eats at a cheap price (most empanadas are around $1.75, tropical shakes are $3) - please try it out!
