Great East Village Mex find: Rancho el Girasol

Finally, a serious Mexican restaurant comes to the East Village (no, Benny’s Burritos doesn’t count). Went this weekend to a new Mex joint, Rancho El Girasol, on 1st Avenue between 13th and 14th St. The owners previously ran that little great Mexican grocery/taco counter on Ave A around 13th St.

This place is fairly casual, but very serious yet with some oddities. A great selection of tacos (including pernil, and chorizo along with the usual chicken and beef). A few tortas, lamb, Bisteak albanil (tasty), a good chicken mole poblano (could be a little more flavorful). It took us 20 minutes to decide what to order, because ther are lots and lts of good choices. Pretty inexpensive. Entrees were $7-$13. It’s BYO for now until they get their license. The oddities: for some reason, there’s pasta on the menu, including eggplant parmigana with spaghetti. Go figure. The place didn’t totally blow me away, but was very tasty. This is absolutely becoming a frequent stop for me.
