looking for great dim sum in scarborough?

Backyard Garden Restaurant (the 2nd) opened up recently on Midland, just a little bit north of Finch, in the green plaza. It used to be Hot Pot City, but they've folded.

I was excited to try their dim sum since I've always went to Hot Pot City for their's. I saw that their dim sum sheet hadnt changed, so I was kinda having a bad feeling, thinking whether the quality had gone low just like HPC's, just before they folded. But to my surprise, it was so yummy!

Cow tummies with white radishes--they were okay. I think HPC did it better; it was tastier before. BUT, I could reason that its because BGR has more clientele now, that their cow tummies are in demand, thus not being able to brew in the sauce as long, therefore not as tasty!

Shrimp wrapped in long white noodles (cheung fun)--OH SO YUMMY!!! Better than HPC's! The noodles were very chewy, just the right texture. Not too thick, not too thin, but leaning on the thin side; but not soooooooo thin that they break easy. Shrimp/prawns were just the right size. Deveined, which is very important!

Deep fried calamari--THE best. They dont deep fry with a batter (same as HPC) so you're not overly eating, thus more room for more food. :) Some tentacles were overcooked, but I find that the bigger the tentacle, the more they're just right, that is, they're not hard to chew.

Pan fried green onion pancakes--my all time favourite anywhere. I know its quite non-economical to have it at dim sum since I could buy a package of it and make it at home. But they're so good!! They were pan fried until crisp, and was quite thick too. Extremely yummy.

Spare rib and chicken feet rice--this one's okay. This one came late, and Mother was concerned, thinking we werent going to be served it since it was quite late. (Try to order it during your first round of ordering.) I was never too big on the rice. HPC used to have REALLY yummy rice. The rice they used was of excellent quality, and they used to pile the spare ribs up high. But this one's just average.

All dim sum are charged at $1.80 each. No tea charge, but I think there is on the weekend, and their tea is pretty good. I went on a Tuesday or Thursday (I cant remember) at about 2pm, and it was still pretty packed when I went in. Go early if you can, for a fabulous dim sum lunch.
