I just moved to Philadelphia, but I'm still working here in the city once a week. Philly is pretty nice (it's no New York...) but there've been some inevitable disappointments - pizza, bagels, etc.
The worst, by far, is the wine situation. There are no real wine shops in Pennsylvania!! I wish someone had told me before I decided to follow my wife to her grad-school city. Archaic Pennsylvania laws mean that all wine and spirits are sold in grim, neon-lit "state stores" that have all the charm and selection of a communist-bloc rationing depot. I'm not a wine expert and I'd been pretty reliant on the helpful suggestions of my local Park Slope wine-shop owner. Now I'm pulling bottles at random off of rusty metal shelves, since the angry teenager at the register doesn't seem like a budding sommelier.
SO - I'm in Manhattan today for work and I'd like to bring a few good bottles back home with me. I'm on the West Side and I'll be both up and downtown today. Can anyone point me to a great wine shop with good prices where I can get a few nice $12 - $17 bottles to tide me over til the next New York pit stop?
