Went to Great China on Kittredge in Berkeley last night after reading about it on the board. I recall something about indifferent service, so I had been warned, but the poor and rude service left me dissapointed and unsatisfied despite good food.
Were not greeted or seated on entry, had to ask, can we sit here after looking for the waiter. Then waited for menu/tea, then waited for waitress to take order, in spite of first sublte (head nods/eye contact) less sublte (arm waves) and not so subtle (get up and walk over to the waitress and ask "do we order from you at the counter?")
Finally our order for wonton soup, tea smoked duck and chinese green beans is taken. Soup comes after minutes, duck about two minutes after that, green beans never arrive. We have eaten everthing, our tea is empty, refilled, still no green beans. After about 30 minutes, we ask for the bill, and ask to have the beans removed from the charge, as they have not arrived. "they are cooking, coming soon, duck was appetizer, take green beans to go will not take off bill"
So we got the beans to go, I dont know what they tasted like, my brother took them, I wouldn't eat them if you paid me.
Soup was good, tea smoked duck tasted like it should, the black bean sauce was very glutinous, the scallion pieces thrown on top of the sauce haphazardly.
Food was good, and even mediocre service would have brought me back, but rude, innefficient service will keep me from ever returning. Anybody else had this problem there? Is this a cultural thing, ie does the european or japanese or thai service mentality not exist in chinese restaurants in general, or is it this place in particular?
