just got back from a few days in Yosemite and points East/South.
I had a slip of paper with a name of a Mexican restaurant in Oakdale that some friends had mentioned but with no details. As we drove through Oakdale on the way to Yosemite we narrowed down the location to a mall on the way out of Oakdale but were not ready to stop for lunch so we saved it for our return. today we drove from Lee Vining and planned our lunch stop for Taqueria El Agave. It's on East F Street in a shopping center right in back of the Beacon Station. Right under the clock - looks pretty new and undistinguished but as we looked around and saw the salsa bar on a bed of ice I felt better. The mariachi music also helped. Janice ordered a taco salad with carnitas and I tried a tamale & chile relleno. We both had horchata also. My platter was OK - sort of old school Mexican with lots of melted cheese over the tamale (pork) - the chile relleno was standard - filled with cheese and battered, fine but I probably wouldn't order it again - I doctored it up with some of the salsas and condiments from the salsa bar. The real find was the carnitas in Janice's taco salad - some serious crunchy bits but still moist - very savory richness.....I think they griddled a portion to order to get that extra crispy exterior to the layer of carnitas in her salad - it made my food pale in comparison. Now I'm sorry I didn't try their al pastor, instead of the tamale & chile relleno. The place was quite busy - we arrived at 11:30 and it was crowded by 11:45 - interesting cross section of Oakdale showed up - Mexican workers picking up to- go lunches, tourists, young mall rats, etc...
So, while some of their food is standard Mexican fare, the carnitas is definitely worth a try....I hope they serve it like we had it in all their preparations ( burrito, taco, tostada, etc....)
