Great Burgers in Long Beach

Like go grinz | Apr 6, 2007 08:20 PM

This is about my favorite burger that I have ever had at any place. It is a true “Hand made” Home-style burger like the ones my Uncle Bob use to make for summer gatherings in his backyard and it is to be had only at the Egg Heaven Café down in Long Beach. First, I have been to the Apple Pan and love their outrageously and unreasonably priced burgers and friendly counter people. I am unimpressed with Pie N Burger in Pasadena because of the price and service. For what it is worth I have enjoyed burgers at Bartley's Burger cottage and O'Sullivan's and Sons in Boston, and my Chicago favorite burger at Wieners Circle. In my opinion Egg Heaven Café is better! Taste, proportion of cooked surface to inside meat, size, bun, and price – about $5.50 to $7.50 depending on plain, cheese, chilli, bacon.... I recommend cheese or cheese and bacon. This burger also comes with a side included. I thought the chilli took away from the great taste of the burger meat and seasonings. The lettuce was fresh, green and crisp. The tomato was also fresh. The burger was maybe ½" to 5/8 “ thick and very large hanging out of the large fresh bun. Now, I have been eating breakfest here a few times over the last few weeks and finally today tried the burger. The breakfast dishes are mostly outstanding but this burger is also.

Just a little non-pretentious place with real people eating there and working the counter. The place has long counter with chairs, several booths and one table. Saturday and Sunday morning is a wait after you sign your name on the list at the door, but well worth the wait. They have special breakfast potatoes they call Super Browns, the “Blue Stack” (Blue berry pancakes) are a must try as is the “Built oatmeal.” The sausage links are outstanding. They have about thirty different omelettes including ten veggie omelettes. Maybe try the burger patty with eggs? That must be the best in L.A.!

On the down side? Well, I really do not like saying anything negative about this place but hey, since everything else is so superior to most other places I was let down with two items so far – biscuits & gravy and the Hash (canned).

Also, I think they close early and only offer breakfast and lunch – no dinner. So if you want to go after lunch time maybe call to be sure they are open.
