A while ago, I wrote a little bit about getting fairly well soused at the Mare Chiaro bar in Little Italy, and then stumbling up towards Broadway (at 1am, on New Years) in search of food. I wound up at VG, on the corner of Broadway and Bleecker -- mainly because it was the only place that was open. But, I had what I remember as the "best burger ever".
Since that time, I'd been hesitant to go back, worried that a sober visit could potentially tarnish what I hold dear as one of my life's finest eating memories. However, after Metallica's recent visit to the Bowery Ballroom (which a friend and I stood outside of for 5 hours, never to get in) we were walking back up Prince St. towards my apartment, at around 2:30am, and realized how hungry we were. I knew one place that would definitely be open. So, basking in the glow of having met two of our lifelong heroes (we may not have gotten into the show, but damn if we didn't get to meet James and Lars), the friend and I headed up to VG.
The burger I got was really big, served on an English Muffin that had its work cut out for it, with strips of thick-cut bacon, cheese, and a side of home fries (tasty, whole, mini taters). My paranoia proved to be a waste of psychological energy, as I still hold that bad boy up amongst my favorites. I'm a tad amazed that running a search online for any information about the VG Bar and Grill will turn up nearly nothing (not even a phonebook listing). I'd send anybody over there to give it a try, and would actually be interested in hearing other opinions.
On a semi-related note -- am I the only person who experiences a touch of nausea when they see McDonald's listed as the #9 audience winner for Citysearch's Best Burger poll? I realize it's Citysearch and all, but still -- holy crap.
