Great Basque in San Juan Bautista

We stumbled upon a wonderful Basque restaurant in San Juan Bautista this weekend, and wanted to share with other fans of Basque cuisine....

Matxain Etxea
206 4th Street, San Juan Bautista, CA 95045

While the menu had a wide variety of pinchos, light options, and regular menu items, we opted for family style dinners, my beloved had the sweetbreads, and lamb shanks for me. Dinner started with fresh bread and carafe of the usual house red wine, followed by a WONDERFUL vegetable soup, an iceburg salad with nice vinegrette dressing, and some really great pinto beans - rich with lovely smoky flavor. This was soon followed by paella-style rice and some really delicious lamb stew. Our entrees were perfect: sweetbreads were prepared simply with red and green peppers, onions and perhaps a bit of bacon. The lamb shank was pure comfort food, melt-in-your-mouth-tender and delicious. Dessert (a sweet custard) and coffee/wine were included, and family style dinners were about $20 each. The portions were enormous.

This is small, family-run restaurant. Our waitress was delightful, and her brother was cooking that night. He came out to the dining area, and was very friendly - gave me instructions for preparing the lamb shanks at home, and also shared another preparation for sweetbreads. They have live music and flamenco dancing twice monthly, and we are definitely going to make the 2 1/2 hour drive again......
