Great Afghan in midtown

Just had a lovely, casual dinner at Ariana on 9th and 52nd. Yes, the place is tiny and the neon sign is, well, a little tacky. But the food and the service are great.

I ordered the veggie combo, with eggplant curry, pumpkin curry, and okra. The curries were perfect: not too spicy, nor too oily, with the vegetables cooked through without disintegrating. The okra had a nice kick to it, too.

My parents had a lamb, carrot and raisin curry, and a chicken and eggplant curry. The latter was apparently better than the former, with was a little dry (but still good enough that my mom finished it and mopped up the leftovers with bread).

The bread is kind of like a whole-wheat naan, but realy crusty. It's served warm.

The owner served us (and everyone else) - he was very friendly and chatted with us despite being very busy. The place had a real neighbourhood atmosphere.

I'll definitely be back.
