Gratzi: Ann Arbor

rainsux | Dec 22, 2013 12:39 PM

We (SWMBO & self) visited Gratzi for the first time in several years, for a holiday dinner with two other couples. We arrived on-time, to find the entry-way jam packed. Hmmm ... but our table was ready and we were seated immediately. Hurray!

No more classic paper/book menus - Android tablets. The appl was perfectly functional, but the experience was poor. A list of pseudo-Italian-babble for dish names, without adjacent explanation. It was necessary to click on each item, individually, to determine the real/offered dish. The food porn itself was spectacular, but the tablets were a PITA. When the waiter asked if we had questions about the menu, I went back to the homepage and asked, "do you have a menu in English?" He ignored my witty(?) observation, then explained that I needed to click on each item. Uh, yeah. I know that. I shouldn't have to click on every bloody item to determine what it is ... then ... the battery died. Ugh. Epic fail.

The dining room was waaay over-stuffed with tables. Uknown to me; I had chosen the chair that blocked passage between the dining room and adjacent bar business to the north. I must've had to leave my seat more than 3-dozen times to accommodate staff and guests that wanted to move between rooms. I mentioned it that night. My comment was noted and a weak apology given. There really wasn't much they could 'do' to fix my complaint that night. It was simply a greedy, bonehead decision to put a chair at that spot. Stoopid. Stoopid. Stoopid. They also didn't offer any consideration; nor did I ask.

The food? Excellent. I enjoyed seafood pasta. SWMBO enjoyed her cut of beef. Excellent wine list. Excellent cheese monger and selections Excellent wine selection. Excellent service that anticipated needs, before we needed to ask. Excellent dining companions.

Overall experience? Miserable. I suggest making reservations and noting that you will not accept seating that utterly blocks a high-traffic passageway for staff and guests. Dunno if this is something [cough] special [greedy] for the holidays; or, if it's SOP for Gratzi.

Will I return? Yes. But I'm gonna be a real SOaB about the table and seating.
