Some Peruvian and Bolivian restaurants have pretty boring menus during the week, but things liven up on weekends. It's always a good idea to take a serious look at the specials.
In the case of Granja de Oro, a Peruvian place, I ate well by ordering two of the weekend specials: causa rellena (pictured below) and sopa de cangrejo (crab).
The causa rellena was so cute, yellow mashed potatoes shaped into the form of a chicken (with the help of beets and broccoli) and stuffed with chicken salad and an olive. Served cold, there is a hint of spice added to make this slightly tingly.
The crab soup, really a bisque, was creamy, and chock full of crab meat and rice. I imagine the crab meat is from South America, but still I was surprised at how overflowing this large bowl was.
Both items made for a very nice meal, and the total came out to $14.
