When I read on this board that Grand Sichuan opened a new branch on 2nd Ave., between 55th and 56th, I was thrilled. Finally, one of my favorite places in NY had come to my neighborhood! I went there last night and was disappointed. It's clearly the same owner, and the menu was quite similar (if not identical) to the 9th Ave. branch, but the food was uneven. The wanton in red chili oil was fabulous (better than at the other location), but the Kung Pao chicken was very disappointing. None of the exploding ginger flavor, way too much watercress, and the chicken itself was bland (no fresh chicken option, either). I'm sure I'll go back, if only to give it a chance and in the hope that they'll rotate chefs, but I can't say that it was a great experience. Btw, I was there from 8:45 to 9:30 and was the only customer in the restaurant. Depressing.
