Just had a fabulous meal at Gramercy Tavern tonight. This is the first time I've been in the back in the hoity-toity section.
The rabbit entree was as good as any rabbit I've had in the U.S. Everything was light with clean, distinct, and forceful flavors. Loved the onion tart as the first giveaway, and the celery root soup w/truffle and parmesan crouton was a wonderful winter soup (even if was 55 degrees). The bittersweet chocolate tart w/caramel ice cream was not shabby.
The waitress recommended a reasonably-priced Chateauneuf-du-Pape that was wonderful.
Service was friendly and warm, starting at the coat check, the front desk, the waiters, and ending with the chef, chatting with guests on the way out.
There IS something about Danny Meyer. He is a fabulous restaurateur, if only because he either finds wonderful people to staff his restaurant, or finds mere mortals and trains them.
My only cavil is that the bread isn't quite up to the level of everything else. Just as well. I might not have been able to eat dessert if I had gorged on bread.
