Have been recruited to help choose a restaurant for 5 30-somethings and a step-mom (the graduate currently lives in Alsace, but was a NY chowhound for many years). Requirements are: not too loud, but not so fancy-schmansy that we can't laugh a lot, any cuisine (tho I'd tend to rule out french). Food and atmosphere equally important, price not so much. Sounds like an easy task, but I'm feeling a little daunted by it. The places that come to mind seem like obvious ones (Gramercy Tavern, Union Sq Cafe, Gotham B&G, Craft, 11 Madison Park -- none of which I've been to, sadly)-- also maybe Hearth? Tamarind?
