A lady friend and I enjoyed a truly gracious meal at Jarnac, in the West Village, last night.
I say gracious because it was really one of the warmest dining experiences I can remember having in a long time. The staff were smiling, attentive, just fantastic. I wish I could put the vibe into words.
The food. I had the shortribs. Just a great, hearty bistro dish. Nothing exotic, but it stuck to the ribs. Very good. My friend had the porcini crusted cod with chantarelles. To be honest, I thought the fish was a bit bland, and I wouldn't say it was a porcini crust as much as the mushrooms were sort of dumped on top. Not a bad dish, but mine was better. We also had the cheese plate (at the same time, I wanted everything all at once). Tasty cheeses, but I would not have chosen blue cheeses for two of the three cheeses, if it had been up to me. Still, we finished every last morsel.
Wine prices were quite low, which was nice.
I recommend Jarnac for solid bistro food served graciously.
