We have been eagerly awaiting for the opening of Gourmet 47 located in the West loop on May street. Tonight they had an open house to preview their fare. My anticipation turned to disappointment. The shelves are 80% stocked. The wine and spirits department isnt stocked Yet. The store features; bakery, sushi, hot food, lunch meat and a prepared foods department. The open house featured a sample of the prepared foods. Unfortunately this consisted of your standard deli fare, guacamole, spinach dip, shrimp, sushi etc. Nothing too gourmet here. The shelves were stocked with things you can find almost anywhere else. Nothing special here either. The coffee bar featured intelligentsia coffee, one of the many coffee bars in the West Loop offering the same.
We have been expecting a true gourmet store like Fox & Obel, Dean & DeLuca, Balduccis etc, instead we have a fancier neighborhood grocery store. Hopefully it will get better with time Maybe one of these days some one will discover the demographics in the West Loop would make an excellent location for a real gourmet store. Fox & Obel are you listening?
