Goose at Knoll's Black Forest Inn

I took my cue from Zoe and went over to Knoll's for the special roast goose dinner, which is available by reservation through the end of the year. Goose was delicious (though I expected that the skin would be crispier, like duck), as were accompanying braised red cabbage, spaetzle and cranberry-apple sauce with baked apple. Also enjoyed a glass of German pinot noir. Cannot say the same for the trio of sorbets we finished off with, which had lackluster flavor and texture.

While we were there, we overheard someone ask a waiter how long the place would be open. He replied, "About two months." Later I ran into Mrs. Knoll in the ladies' room (changing the toilet paper!) and asked her about it. She said that after 44 years she was considering retirement, and if she retires in February everything in the place would likely be sold. There wasn't time for details.

Call ahead for goose dinner.
