Gooey butter cake?

shadrach | Sep 18, 2004 08:18 AM

Does anyone know of a bakery in the DC area that sells gooey butter cake?

My parents used to buy this a lot when I was a kid growing up outside Phila., so I figure there has to be somewhere in DC/Baltimore that sells it. The dish apparently was originated by German immigrants so a German bakery might sell it.

Gooey butter cake consists of a dry, cakey bottom (often made from day old cake or danishes) with a 'gooey' top of butter and sugar, which sometimes gets a little crust. I am used to seeing it sold in square 9x9 pans.
